Light Lagers Dominate BeerBoard's 2021 Year in Beer ReportSyracuse, NY  (RestaurantNews.com)  BeerBoard just released its 2021 Year in Beer report, highlighting a strong recovery for on-premise draft sales compared to 2020.

The leader in technology and automated business intelligence for retailers, brewers and distributors compiled statistics from over $1 billion of client’s sales to reveal overall pour volume jumped 36.6% over 2020. Among these sales, domestic beer held its firm grip as the leading category with 50.1% of total sales, followed by craft beer at 34.7% and imports at 15.2% a share.

As for the brand of choice, 2021’s top 10 was:

  1. Bud Light
  2. Michelob Ultra
  3. Miller Lite
  4. Coors Light
  5. Blue Moon
  6. Modelo Especiál
  7. Dos Equis Lager Especiál
  8. Yuengling Traditional Lager
  9. Stella Artois
  10. Budweiser

The prize for the largest volume increase for these brands goes to Modelo Especiál with an increase of 63.4% from 2020.

From this list, it is clear to see that beer drinkers love the Lagers, particularly Light Lagers. In 2021, Light Lagers retained its title of being the first-choice style and increased its share by 24.6% from last year. The top 5 styles of the year were:

  1. Light Lager
  2. Lager
  3. IPA
  4. Belgian and White Ale
  5. European Ale

“It’s always fun to look back on the previous year and see everyone’s drink of choice, but it’s equally important for retailers and distributors to have access to this information year-round,” said BeerBoard Founder and CEO Mark Young. “For example, our report shows European Ale volume skyrocketed over 287% in the past year. That is extremely valuable information for our clients that they will use to optimize their inventory this year. We love the Year in Beer report and can’t wait to see what’s poured in 2022.”

Finally, the Year in Beer report showed which areas of the country needed a drink this past year. In 2021, it was Californians that upped their game the most with a 54.5% increase in on-premise draft sales, followed by the Great Lakes, West and Mid-South regions.
